Q&A WITH CAROLINE
QUESTION: What got you into photography?
CAROLINE POWELL: I have always enjoyed looking at photographs. They capture a moment in time and tell a story. From famous photos to blurry old family snaps. I initially started taking photos back in the 80’s but it was rather short lived as film and development costs were high and there wasn’t much money about. I took it up again about a year ago as a hobby and as something that I hoped would improve my mental health and self-esteem as that’s something I have struggled with over the years.
QUESTION: What type of photography do you like the best?
CAROLINE POWELL: I enjoy taking photos of the coast and Northumberland skies most of all. But I also see the beauty in urban decay and dereliction.
QUESTION: How would you describe your new book?
CAROLINE POWELL: I would describe my book as being a look over a year in my life and what I have seen and with some of the art, what I would like to have seen. Hopefully it will inspire others to take up photography and enjoy it as much as I do.
QUESTION: What was your inspiration for the book?
CAROLINE POWELL: My inspiration for the book was to simply share some views and hopefully that others might enjoy seeing them too.
QUESTION: What inspires your art? Is it the image comes first or how you see it in your head?
CAROLINE POWELL: I often have an image in my head that I want to photograph but mostly it’s just serendipity and snapping what I see.
QUESTION: Your art reminds me of a vintage time, what is your favourite time period?
CAROLINE POWELL: I am very fond of the 70’s as I lived through that decade but the swinging 60’s always fascinated me. As does The Jazz/Art Deco period.
QUESTION: How do you use nostalgia in your art and writing?
CAROLINE POWELL: I like to use a nostalgia for the art deco/golden age of travel period in my art. I think the architecture, cars, fashions etc were absolutely beautiful. Also the coloured glass and Clarice Cliff stuff.
QUESTION: Poetry is a relatively new creative outlet for you, what do you enjoy most about poetry and verse?
CAROLINE POWELL: I enjoy poetry but find a lot of it is a bit posh for me. I would like mine to be authentic and accessible with a working-class voice.
QUESTION: Would you do cover design and what are your ideas for your first book?
CAROLINE POWELL: I would absolutely love to do cover design.
QUESTION: Have you done a photography or art exhibition? If not do you have plans to do an exhibition of your art?
CAROLINE POWELL: I have never done an exhibition of art or photography but it’s something I would like to do in the future.
QUESTION: How do you see your creative projects working out and where do you see yourself in 5-10 years’ time?
CAROLINE POWELL: I would like to carry on as I am but in future maybe doing some themed work, The Coast, urban decay etc.
QUESTION: What future photography, art, writing or creative projects can you tell us about?
CAROLINE POWELL: I would like to do more verse and possibly branch out into a bit of fiction, maybe a short story or two.
